Irish rockers U2 are said to be very keen to secure a slot at the prestigious Edenderry GAA pavillion this August as part of their huge European tour.
A spokesman for the most famous rock band in the world recently claimed that the pavillion is high on the priority list if they can in fact secure an available slot from pavillion manager Aidan Burke.
"Oh it's definitely our number 1 priority" the spokesman stated. "Larry and Adam were at the two Lip Sync Battles last year and were blown away by the sound and atmosphere the venue created. Adrian Brereton just blew the lads away, he was 'savage'.. The lads are very eager to upstage the Rolling Stones at Croke Park and where better to do so than Edenderry GAA pavillion. It would be a huge coup to secure the pavillion. They don't want to be upstaged by some geriatrics on their home turf" he said.
It's yet to be confirmed by anyone at the club if the indoor concert would go ahead but one elderly source on the executive committee said they are sceptical due to the bingo being held there every Sunday night.
"There'd be too much tidying up if we had that on a Saturday night and it sure as hell won't be on a Sunday, the bingo cannot be cancelled. It's a guaranteed money spinner. It would be different if it was for someone like Joe Dolan God rest him, he'd definitely sell out the place but I'm not sure U2 or whatever you call them would be a draw" the aging committee member said.
When U2's spokesman was quizzed as to whether they would explore the option of an outdoor concert if the bingo could in fact not be cancelled he said "Well we have asked but there was some unrest from the Carrick Road residents association. They have an agreement that only three concerts a year can take place and there are already three local acts booked with Uncle Arthur, Shane Hynes and John Nolan all scheduled for 2018".
Senior football manager Peter Brady is fully behind the idea of U2 playing on the pitch and insisted they could train in the old tech field that night. "Jasus yea go ahead, the lads won't see a football till September anyway, I'll be running the s**t outta them till then.
Despite the optimism surrounding the outdoor gig from the towns people it seems unlikely to go ahead as groundsman Ago Cullen said "U2 or any other hippy band or teen boppers can feck off with themselves they'll ruin the jasus pitch".
Club chairman Willie Forde will be keen to avoid a similar debacle that accompanied the cancelled Gareth Brooks gigs in Croke Park in 2014 and is said to be in intense negotiations with the local residents and U2 manager Guy Oseary, who also represents Madonna. Oseary's managerial partnership with Madonna could yet prove pivotal as it well known throughout the town that Mr Forde is a keen fan of the American turned British singer and has been heard on many occasion in Byrnes bar belting out 'Like a Virgin'.
"The residents here are patient enough putting up with the three gigs a year and constant pig lorries turning and wrecking the road" one resident said.
U2 have been keen Edenderry supporters for a number of years now and in an interview with 'Time Magazine' in New York Bono disclosed that his 2000 hit record 'Beautiful Day' was in fact written and inspired by the club.
"Beautiful Day was inspired by 'our' win over Rhode in 1999. There are some historical moments in life where people remember where they were when something special happened and for us, U2, we will always remember where we were when Tony 'TK' Kenny saved Deckie Gorman's penalty. We were standing on the old hill in O'Connor Park overlooking the hospital. Jasus we sank some porter in Eugene Kelly's after that" Bono was quoted as saying.
If the band get the go ahead tickets are expected to be on sale at the door on the night.
