Edenderry Under 16 girls played the final of their championship against Naomh Ciaran (Ferbane) on Thursday last June 28th. The girls had been impressive in the group stages winning all three games and they also also had a convincing win in the semi final defeating near neighbours Rhode by 5-12 to 1-7 thus making them favourites to win the game and complete a championship three in a row. However with the gap in time between the semi final and final (6 weeks) due to exams and with the Ferbane girls on a high after winning the under 14 Feile competition the previous weekend this game was also going to be a close one and so it proved with the Edenderry girls coming up short by five points in the end. The game started slowly for both teams and it was point for point in the early stages until Edenderry hit a golden 15 minutes period before half time including 2 goals from outstanding full forward Shauna Ward leaving them leading at the break 2-6 to 0-4. Just after half time Edenderry scored another great goal from roving corner forward Roisin Hurley to lead by 10 points but that was good as it got as the Naomh Ciaran girls came to life and blitzed a trail from then until the end of the game and eventually winning on scorline of 3-11 to 3-6. Despite the huge disappointment of the result the Edenderry girls can hold their heads high as they have had a hugely successful few years and have been a credit to themselves both on and off the pitch throughout that period. We wish all our 16 years olds good luck as they now move on to the bigger senior stage and hope that they will form the backbone of our senior team for many years to come. For the girls underage next year the challenge is to work even harder in 2013 to win back the title. The ladies club would also like to say a big thanks to our management team of Gabriel and Bernie Gorman and Ronan Kavanagh for their tremendous work with the girls throughout the year and indeed the last 3 years.
