Over the past few weeks Edenderry GAA has lost another one of its greats. Tom O'Neill late of Fr. Paul Murphy Street was an outstanding Edenderry & Offaly player and continued to support the club over his lifetime with involvement in various committees over the years. Many of his former team mates and members of the Club formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral as a mark of respect to the great man.
The holder of 3 Offaly Senior Football medal ('51,'53 & 57) Tom was solid defender and ever present for Edenderry Seniors for 17 years. He captained Offaly in the 1952 Leinster Senior Championship and in all played for the Faithful County 13 times League & Championship from 1952 - 1954.
During his era 7-a-side Tournaments and other Tournaments were very popular and Tom was part of very successful Edenderry teams during this time. He Captained Edenderry to success int he prestigious Phoenix Cup in Clonmel in the late fifties.
Following his successful playing career Tom gave the club a helping hand at committee level and was heavily involved in the financing of the Pavilion acting as a guarantor for the loans required to build the clubhouse. This gesture was reflective of his commitment to Edenderry GAA on and off the field.
