SFC Round 2:
Edenderry 0-11 1-6 Ferbane......................
Edenderry seniors recorded their first win of the Tullamore Court Hotel senior football championship 2012 when they beat Ferbane on Sunday on a scoreline of 0-11 1-6. Played in terrible weather conditions, the reds were worthy winners but they know they will have to improve ahead of Monday's clash with neighbours Rhode.
The opening ten minutes was a tight affair with only Mark Young registering a score after some good play from Sean Doyle while the Ferbane goalie pulled off a great save from Dean Cummins after three minutes. Both sides struggled to grab control of the game but Ferbane did respond in the eleventh minute with their first score of the game.
Daniel Nolan instantly replied for the reds when his long range drive from almost sixty yards out deceived the goalkeeper and bounced over the bar. Points from Mark Young, Stephen Guing and Ciaran Hurley stretched Edenderry's lead to four points after fourteen minutes but two minutes later Ferbane corner forward Joe Maher rattled the Edenderry net and closed the gap to the minimum.
Ciaran Hurley again pointed to put the reds two points clear but in the twenty first and twenty third minute Ferbane pointed to level the game. A Richie Dalton score in the thirtieth minute ensured the County Champions led at half time, although just about.
Half Time:
Edenderry 0-6 1-3 Ferbane
The rain subsided and the football was that little bit better for the second half but both sides still struggled for scores. Derek Kelly opened his account in the fifth minute and Ciaran Hurley registered his third in the tenth minute. David Hanlon made his presence felt in the fifteenth minute when he replaced an ill Mark Young and set Derek Kelly up for his second of the game.
Ferbane scored their first point of the second half in the twentieth minute and six minutes later a Richie Dalton '45 gave Edenderry a four point cushion with four minutes remaining. Ferbane hit two late scores in the thirtieth and thirty second minute to leave just two between the sides at full time.
Edenderry will be pleased with the two points after drawn their opening game against Tullamore but they will need to improve their performance for the remainder of the championship and make the most of their chances.
On the day Edenderry were best served by Mark Young, Daniel Nolan, Stephen Guing while Adrian Murphy was a rock at full back.
