Edenderry 1-15 1-9 Walsh Island
Edenderry seniors made it two wins in two games with a six point win over Walsh Island in Edenderry on Friday evening.
The opening fifteen minutes were very poor from a scoring perspective with both sides hitting multiple wides and it took until the sixteenth minute when Walsh Island forward Willie Mulhall eventually registered the first score of the game.
It was the wake up call the reds needed and with sixty seconds Edenderry took the lead with scores from corner forwards Sean Doyle and Ciaran Hurley. Walsh Island replied a minute later and all of a sudden the crowd that had assembled to watch, had a game on their hands.
However, the reds took complete control from the twenty first minute and scores from Sean Doyle(3), Keith McGuinness(2) and Derek Kelly gave them a commanding 0-9 0-2 lead with twenty nine minutes gone in the first half. Two late frees for Walsh Island in the thirtieth minute closed the gap to five points at the half time break.
Half time:
Edenderry 0-9 0-4 Walsh Island
The visitors reduced the deficit to four points in the opening minute of the second half but points from Stephen Guing (5 mins) and Derek Kelly (9 mins) restored the reds six points lead. It was lucky for Edenderry that they got them scores as by the thirteenth minute, Walsh Island had scored 1-1, their goal coming from an Alan Mulhall penalty.
There was now just two points between the sides and Walsh Island had the momentum but Edenderry responded brilliantly with scores coming from Richie Dalton, Keith McGuinness and Sean Doyle to reopen their five point lead. Walsh Island pointed twice in the twenty fifth minute to set up a potentially nervous finish to the game but a Ciaran Hurley goal for the reds ended the game as a contest before a late Sean Doyle free insured a seven point victory.
This is a game Edenderry could have won by a lot more but they did show great character and responded well to a number of setbacks throughout the game.
Next up for the seniors is a home tie vs Ferbane on Saturday April 13th.
