Edenderry 1-7 3-6 Clara
Edenderry's senior footballers failed to build on their opening round win over Tubber last week when they suffered a five point defeat at the hands of Clara on Saturday evening in Edenderry.
The reds were dealt a blow when they lost midfielder Richie Dalton after just four minutes due to injury and they were left chasing the game as early as the third minute when former Offaly U21 footballer Barry Cushen rattled the Edenderry net.
Mark Young scored two points in two minutes, one from a free after Cormac Hurley was fouled and one from play but Clara managed three points of their own to take a 1-3 0-2 lead with fifteen minutes gone. Dan Nolan reduced the deficit to three with a well taken point in the twentieth minute but Clara punished the reds just one minute later for some careless defending.
Edenderry gave away possession on their own half back line through a misplaced hand pass and the Clara forwards were more than happy to capitalize as they scored their second goal of the game. Two late points from the boot of Mark Young left four points between the sides at half time.
Half time:
Edenderry 0-5 2-3 Clara
Spectators had to wait until the forty eight minute in the second half for a score as both sides struggled to make use of their possession but it was Clara who were first off the mark. A Derek Kelly point a minute later kept Edenderry in the game but Clara opted the ante and produced another further two points. Mark Young's fifth point of the game brought Edenderry back to within five points once again Clara punished the home side with their third goal of the game.
The reds looked set for an eight point home defeat but for a late goal from Mark Young in the sixtieth minute to leave the final score reading 1-7 to 3-6.
Next up for the senior footballers is a trip to Croghan on Friday night March 7th. Throw in at 8pm.
