The first of the senior semi-finals was held on Monday evening last in Clara.
Last year’s champions St, Rynagh’s played the 2011 champions Edenderry for the top spot in the final. St, Rynagh’s started out the better of the two teams and lead 1-03 to no score after seven minutes, but the Edenderry girls soldered on and battled hard to reel the champions in. The very young talented Edenderry corner forward Shauna Ward lifted the heads of her team mates and spurred them on when she blasted the ball in the back of Laura Devery’s goal, this was after a good passage of play when at the other end a great save from Edenderry keeper Dee Evans saw Nicole Farrelly claim the ball and Christine McDonnell and Sarah Maloney glided by the Rynagh’s midfield where Shauna went on a solo run to claim her first score of the match. Offaly’s Kym Furey added to the Edenderry score line with two well taking points from frees. Shauna Ward added further to the score line when she gathered the ball on the forward line and sidestepped Sinead Daly to bury the ball in the Rynagh’s goal and minutes later added to her tally with a point. In the mean time St, Rynagh’s had added a further 2-04 from Offaly’s leading scorers to date Linda Sullivan and Mairead Daly to leave the half time score line St, Rynagh’s 3-07 to Edenderry 2-03.
The second half started with St, Rynagh’s Mairead Daly scoring a lovely point with less than a minute gone, but Edenderry’s Kym Furey cancelled it out when she scored a cracking goal in the fifth minute to leave only five between the sides, 3-08 to 3-03.
St, Rynagh’s took control of the game from here on in and notched up 1-05 from Linda Sullivan, Mairead Daly, Elaine Sullivan and Kate Grogan before Claire Connolly added a point for Edenderry. Fourteen minutes remaining and St, Rynagh’s leading on a 4-13 to 3-04 scoreline. Linda Sullivan had a great game for the St, Rynagh’s team and added a further goal and a point to her tally of 4-05 on the day. Kym Furey added a further point and the last score for Edenderry on the twenty sixth minute.
The final score line St, Rynagh’s 5-15 to Edenderry 3-05.
