(Who made the squad for Kiev?)
Episode 4 - The Hand Picked-Panel
The players looked at each other suspiciously as they mingled in dressing room number 1 of the newly built, state of the art, Edenderry GAA facilities. They began huddling together in packs and anyone who had any knowledge of Edenderry football over the last 35 years could clearly see the players had naturally grouped together perfectly according to age. One side of the room was taken up by the 1990’s squad, which included the current Senior Manager, Peter Brady.
(This is what Peter Brady does to the lillie's... Imagine what he's going to do to the Ukrainians)
This by far was the most formidable looking group. They seemed to have a constant look of anger on their faces, like impatient parents looking on dis-approvingly at their children’s bad behaviour. Niall ‘Golly’ Comerford was the only one who made any attempt to smile as he recounted a few yarns to his balding pals sitting close by.
(VC David Farrell has threatened to kick 'Golly off the plane if he wears this horrendous jumper to Kiev)
On the opposite wall sat the current exceptional crop of Edenderry footballers, not much more good humoured and equally as suspicious. “What are those auld lads doing here?” Mark Young could be heard mumbling. “Suddenly the door sprung open and in walked the wonderfully attired Vice Chairman David Farrell. He looked impressive in his now customary over-sized brown cowboy hat and extremely flashy suit. It was from the breast pocket of this newly acquired suit that he produced one of his trade mark Cuban cigars. He lit it slowly and took a few slow drags before showering the room with a leafy Cuban aroma. “Put that out!” bellowed Com Byrne, “This is a no smoking area and most of us are athletes here” he cried. The VC gave a withering look to the newly appointed Senior Captain. “This is MY house, I make the rules around here” quipped the Edenderry/Mississippi native.
(Senior captain Colm Byrne is renowned for being outspoken and really enjoys anything free)
“Right lads, listen up”, began the VC “it’s very simple, there is list going up on the notice board and it will contain the names of the players included in the panel for Kiev, now some of ye lot are going to be disappointed but sure that’s just the way it goes, and anyway my contact in the Ukrainian Embassy couldn’t get all of you lot Visa’s, and in fairness some of ye have a very dodgy past so it’s only to be expected, ye only have yourselves to blame” grinned the VC knowingly. “Right, we meet up tomorrow Friday 25th May in Dublin Airport, bring your passports and a few pairs of jocks, everything else is being paid for thanks to The King of Rock & Roll!”.. David slowly moved towards the notice board and pinned up a crisp white sheet of paper containing 25 names. He took one last look at the crowded dressing room, smiled, turned and slowly strolled out the door.

There was a moment of hesitation in the dressing room, players old and new looked at each other nervously, and then…………….. The stampede for the notice board began! The next 15 minutes consisted of shouts of joy mixed equally with wails of sorrow as each individual discovered his fate. Was he IN or was he OUT. As the last player dejectedly exited dressing room number 1, the list was hanging precariously by its only thumb tack before a short sharp gust of wind sent the page twirling and arcing through the dressing room before coming to rest face up on the floor of the inner sanctum of the playing staff of Edenderry. The following 25 privileged names could be read as follows:
1. Colonel David Farrell – Team Secretary/Agent
2. Peter Brady – Manager
3. Greg Farrelly- Speech Writer
4. Alan Ennis – Greg’s Butler
5. Flying Freddie Grehan – Physio
6. Keith McGuinness 7. Ciaran “Duke” O’Connell 8. Niall ‘Golly’ Comerford 9. Derek Kelly 10. Jamie Dolan 11. Cian Farrell 12. Adao Dafe 13. Adam Mahon 14. Jamie Coates 15. Brian Quinlan 16. Sean Doyle 17. Kevin Guing 18. Jack Guing 19. Oran Lawton 20. Rodge Hanlon 21. Podge Hanlon 22. Jordan Hayes 23. Briain Reilly 24. David Reynolds 25. Stuart Cullen
