"My biggest regret is not playing for my boyhood favourites, Edenderry" confirms Robbie

Former Ireland soccer ace Robbie Keane, who earlier this week announced his retirement from professional football, has said that his biggest regret in life is not lining out for his boyhood favourite team Edenderry GAA.

Keane (38) fulfilled many life ambitions throughout his twenty year career including spells at many of his boyhood teams including Inter Milan, Wolves, Coventry, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspurs, Celtic, LA Galaxy and ATK in India.

"I was so lucky to play for all the teams I supported as a kid. Growing up in Tallaght all the kids my age had LA Galaxy or ATK jersey's so for me it was a life long ambition to play for those clubs. Obviously, being an Irish kid to get to play for Liverpool and Celtic is a boyhood dream too" Keane reportedly told our news reporter.

However, despite enjoying a magnificent career with many top clubs in Europe and becoming Ireland's record goal-scorer, Keane still has one major regret regarding his career.

"Yea it's true, I was desperate to play for Edenderry. I really was. It would have been a boyhood dream to pull on that red jersey. I had family from Fr Paul Murphy Street and spent many a summer down the GAA field watching the seniors. Finbarr Cullen would have been one of my favourite players ever but he supported the Gunners (Arsenal), our arch enemy at Spurs" Mr Keane apparently stated.

"I came close on one occasion. Things were going poorly for me at Liverpool. Rafa wanted me out. He didn't really want to sign me in the first place even though Liverpool was my boyhood team. I had left my other boyhood team Tottenham Hotspur and moved to Anfield but things weren't right. I was over in Edenderry that January and approached Edenderry about playing senior in 2011. I had the nicks and socks an' alI and I thought me and Sean Doyle could have been a deadly partnership. But the fecking so called 'Ban' was in place and because I'd lined out for Liverpool the management weren't able to pick me. It was devastating. I could have went to Ballyfore but I couldn't do that to the reds. I love them too much".

Having missed out on huge move to Edenderry, Keane was thrown a lifeline when some clubs the opposite side of the Boyne bridge approached him but he dismissed the notion he ever came near to signing for them.

"A Kildare club? WHA?? COME OUT!" he said when we asked him. "For Christ sake I wouldn't just go anywhere ya know. I only wanted to play for my boyhood clubs".

It was a case of so near but yet so far as Keane left Liverpool and returned to his other boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur before spells at Celtic, West Ham, LA Galaxy, Aston Villa and ATK, coincidentally all the clubs close to his heart.

Robbie Keane announced his retirement from professional football earlier this week and he confirmed to our reporter that it was his boyhood dream to retire from professional football.

Tributes poured in for the lethal striker with some of the Edenderry footballers paying homage to the new Ireland assistant manager.

"I'm glad he didn't come to Edenderry he would have taken my place" said Mark Young who missed a crucial penalty in the 2011 county final.

"I wonder how much money he made in his career. Money money money" senior captain Colm Byrne said from his new villa in Venezuela.

"He probably would have been an asset to Edenderry, but he'd have never made the schools team. I love schools football" confirmed towering midfielder Stephen Guing.

"I could have wired the house for him" stated Sean Doyle
