Edenderry 2-12 Rhode 1-9
Edenderry minors maintained their 100% record in the championship with a six point victory over Rhode on Wednesday night. Edenderry were the better team on the night and fully deserving of their win with Sean Doyle hitting an impressive 1-6.
Edenderry started brightly and with just thirty seconds gone Peter O’Neill pointed for Edenderry. Just two minutes later Sean Doyle kicked his first of the night and the reds were looking impressive. Rhode replied instantly with their first point of the game but four minutes later Peter O’Neill stretched Edenderry’s lead with a pointed free. Rhode again hit back with their second point and both sides battled hard for possession over the coming minutes.
Twelve minutes into the first half Edenderry sprung into life and two points from Sean Moriarty and one from a Sean Doyle free gave the reds a comfortable four point lead. After twenty two minutes Sean Doyle was again to the fore and a great solo effort lead to Sean finishing the ball to the back of the net to give Edenderry a commanding lead. However Rhode didn’t lay down and quickly responded with a goal and a pointed free. Sean Doyle again pointed for Edenderry and deep into injury time Rhode had the final say of the first half to leave just three between the sides
Half time
Edenderry 1-7 Rhode 1-4
Rhode started the second half the stronger team after just four minutes had scored two free’s to leave the minimum between the sides. Aaron McDonnell pointed on five minutes to extend Edenderry’s lead but it was cancelled out just one minute later from another Rhode free. Eight minutes into second half Sean Moriarty took off on a solo run when he cut in the end line but his shot was blocked on the line by a Rhode defender, however in bizarre circumstance an attempted clearance struck the back of another Rhode defender and went in to the net.
There was then a seven minute lull but Sean Doyle pointed a free on fifteen minutes and quickly followed it up two minutes later his fifth point of the game. Rhode hit back with two more points, both from free’s but once again it was that man again Sean Doyle who kicked a point for the reds to put them back five points ahead. Dan Nolan, now operating at full forward had the final say of the game when he kicked a point in twenty ninth minute.
Edenderry can be very pleased with this result as it now leaves them top of the group with just one game remaining against St Broughans. Defensively Edenderry were very sound and restricted Rhode to just five points in the second half, all from free’s.
