Minors beaten by St Broughan's

Minor championship result:

Edenderry 1-8 1-18 St Broughans

Edenderry minors suffered their first defeat of the 2011 Championship with a ten point beating by St Broughans on Wednesday evening. The game was played in poor weather conditions but Edenderry can have no complaints and Broughans were the far superior team on the night.

The hosts started the game the better team and were two points ahead after just three minute before a brace from Sean Doyle, one from a free, levelled the game. Edenderry failed to score in the next eighteen minutes and unfortunately for them St Broughans took full advantage by hitting seven unanswered points. On the twenty third minute Sean Doyle added his third of the game but Broughans again pointed to keep seven between the sides. The remaining five minutes of the first half was very entertaining and Edenderry managed four points courtesy of Ciaran Farrell, Sean Doyle, Mikie Clear and Andrew Forde while St Broughans added two points of their own.

The second half belonged to the home side and with fourteen minutes gone the game was effectively over. With just three minutes gone in the second half Broughans had registered three points and on the fourteenth minute they got the goal despite the best efforts of Cormac Hurley to seal victory. They quickly added their fourth point of the second half to give themselves a twelve point lead before Dan Nolan point after Jamie Dolan’s effort was palmed away. From the resulting kick-out Mikie Clear won a free and played a quick ball to Mark Nolan who played through Sean Doyle and Sean finished the ball to the back of the net. Edenderry’s revival was short lived as that proved to be their last score of the game while in the twenty fourth minute and tweny eight minute St Broughans added two further points to leave ten points between the sides.

Edenderry will be disappointed with their performance and while they were missing lads through holidays, the mistakes they made during the game cost them dearly and had it not been for goalkeeper Cormac Hurley it could have been a lot worse. Constantly giving away possession lead to most of Broughans scores and good players like Peter Cunningham and Lee Dempsey will punish teams that commit these offences. However a positive remains in that Edenderry have qualified for the knockout stages and hopefully the will learn from their mistakes.
