Former child prodigy Mark Young has sensationally claimed he is just as good at golf as the recently crowned Open champions Shane Lowry.
"I was playing off scratch at age 11 but then decided to concentrate solely on my education. I couldn't pass up the chance of achieving my dream of joining the defence forces just to wack a ball around the grass everyday. I had to dedicate my time to school but if Shane fancies a game someday I'd be happy to school him" Young claimed in this morning's Edenderry Topic newspaper.
Young (28) also went on to state that the thought of winning €1.7m in prize money wouldn't interest him anyway and that no money can buy you a senior county medal.
"I'm happy with winning senior championships, always get a few days on the beer after them and people tell you you're great".
The former Offaly minor star was part of the Edenderry team that defeated Clara in the 2011 county final where he missed a crucial penalty with just minutes remaining. Despite this blunder, the reds held out for a one point victory.
Lifelong friend of the Greenwood Park native Gary Cronin said it would have been nice to see his old childhood neighbour win the €1.7m jackpot at Portrush on Sunday.
"It would have been fantastic if Mark stuck with the golf and won that money. He owes me €50 this 9 months" Cronin said.
