Hurlers secure their Junior A Status with 7 point win

Edenderry hurlers retained their junior ‘A’ status with a seven point win over Raheen on Tuesday night. Played in ferocious weather conditions it was the three men from the Derries, Martin Keogh, Sean Og Farrell and Cillian Farrell who registered the scores to win the game for Edenderry.

Raheen had the aid of the strong breeze in the first half and they used it well with the first three scores of the game in the fifth, seventh and twelfth minute. Edenderry eventually settled down and Cillian Farrell pointed a free in the thirteenth minute. Four minutes later Cillian pointed again and left just one between the sides despite Raheen’s superior possession. David Hanlon won a free at his own ’65 and played a quick ball into Cillian Farrell who made no mistake with the strike. Martin Keogh won the ball from the puck out and sent the ball over the bar for Edenderry to take the lead in the eighteenth minute. Both sides were finding scores hard to come by and there was an eleven minute spell where neither side scored. With just one minute remaining in the first half a long ball arrived into the Edenderry square and was not dealt with by the defence resulting in a goal for Raheen.

Raheen were first off the mark in the second half with a point inside the first two minutes but it proved to be their last score for twenty minutes and Edenderry seized control. Jason Carey replaced Ger Noonan at half time and Jason was straight into action with a long ball into the Raheen goal mouth area and it was Cillian Farrell who was first to react as he finished the ball to the back of the net to tie the game at 1-4 apiece. Nine minutes later there was some great play from Martin Keogh who laid it off to Cillian Farrell who shot from half way and the umpire raised the white flag once again. Cillian pointed twice more in the twelfth and fifteenth minute from free’s after fouls on Jason Carey and Martin Keogh. Raheen scored their last point of the game in the twenty second minute to leave two points between the sides. Sean Og Farrell was then introduced in place of Ger Hanlon for Edenderry in what was his first game back after fourteen months out injured. He made an immediate impact when he scored two points in the space of a minute before three further points from Cillian Farrell secured the win for the reds.

This was arguably Edenderry’s best performance this year in what has been a difficult season for the hurlers. Defensively they were very strong with David Hanlon excellent at centre back while up front Cillian Farrell provided some great scores. On the night they were best served by Derek Egan, David Hanlon, Daniel Nolan, Martin Keogh and Cillian Farrell
