Offaly SFC round 3:
Edenderry 1-9 1-8 Tullamore
Edenderry recorded their second win of the 2011 senior football championship with a one point win over Tullamore on Sunday evening. The reds moved on to four points and a step closer to a quarter final but in general it was a poor game.
The reds started the game the better and took the lead after three minutes when Ciaran Hurley pointed from a free. Tullamore dominated the following twenty minutes and registered three points on the eight, eleventh and fourteenth minute. Edenderry scored their second point of the game after twenty two minutes when Keith McGuinness pointed and five minutes later they levelled the game with another Ciaran Hurley free. With just a minute to go in the first half Stuart Cullen scored his first of the game after some great play from Basil Malone & Sean Pender to give Edenderry a half time lead.
Half time:
Edenderry 0-4 0-3 Tullamore
Edenderry introduced Dean Cummins for his senior debut at half time in place of the injured Wayne Mooney but it was Tullamore that started the second half the stronger team and within the first minute they were on level terms. Five minutes on the clock and Tullamore took the lead and just three minutes later stretched their lead to two points. Edenderry hit back on the twelfth minutes with a Ciaran Hurley free and just one minute later Stuart Cullen levelled the game after some brilliant play from Sean Pender & Ciaran Hurley. Three minutes later Mark Young put the reds ahead for the first time in the second half but Tullamore gave everything and regained the lead within three minute. There was twenty one minutes gone when Mark Young pointed for Edenderry and four minutes later Edenderry got the goal they needed badly. Martin Keogh played a long ball into Stuart Cullen who won it brilliantly and played the ball across the goal area where Dean Cummins volleyed it to the roof of the net. Edenderry appeared to have the game won but in the twenty ninth minute disaster struck as Edenderry failed to deal with a high ball into the square and Tullamore rattled the net to level the game. Deep into injury time Stuart Cullen was fouled and Ciaran Hurley pointed the pressure kick for his fourth of the game. There was one chance left in the game and lucky for Edenderry Tullamore didn’t take the chance as they shot wide and referee Ciaran Groome blew the final whistle.
