Senior Championship V St.
Rynaghs Sunday 05-08-2012
Edenderry Senior Ladies played
their second round of the championship against St. Rynagh’s in Killeigh on
Sunday last. This was always going to be a tough encounter for Edenderry versus
championship favourites Rynaghs who did not participate in this year’s County
league campaign. Edenderry were forced to line out without their influential
captain and midfielder Christine McDonnell due to holidays. Rynaghs were quick
off the mark and kicked two fine points before All Star Kim Furey who was
carrying a niggling hip injury, opened the scoring for Edenderry with a fine
point. St. Rynaghs dominated the kickouts and were rampant in the opening
period, creating attack after attack. Edenderry’s second score came from the
penalty spot from Kym Furey who shot to the corner of the net.
Half-Time Score Edenderry
1-1 St. Rynaghs 3-11
Edenderry began the second period
on a much brighter note with Niamh Kavanagh moving to midfield. The reds were
awarded their second penalty after a foul on Maura Byrne and Kym Furey stepped
up to score her second goal of the game. Elisha Hunston kicked a fine point
from play before full forward Maura Byrne fielded a high ball and shot to the
back of the net. Elisha Hunston scored a point from a free and a third penalty
was awarded to Edenderry after Maura Byrne was dragged to the ground. Elisha
Hunston took over the kicking duties and riffled her shot to the net. The reds
were growing in confidence at this stage and a great move finished with Roisin
Hurley who was making her championship debut kicked Edenderr’y fifth goal of
the game. Elisha Hunston kicked her third point of the game to leave the final
score
Edenderry 5-4 St. Rynaghs 4-12
This was a great second half team
performance by the Edenderry girls who never gave up and fought very hard until
referee Chris Dwyer blew the final whistle, with five points sparating the
teams at the finish. Their next outing
is away to Clara week beginning the 13th August.
