Edenderry juniors suffered a big defeat at the hands of Ferbane on Saturday evening in Ferbane. The game was played in very poor weather conditions but it was the home side who thoroughly deserved their win.

Edenderry opened the games scoring when youngster Aaron O’Connell pointed from distance in the first minute but it all went downhill from there. Ferbane responded instantly and levelled the game with a pointed free. By the tenth minute Ferbane had raced into a 0-5 0-1 lead. Between the tenth and twelfth minute the game as a contest effectively came to and end when Ferbane got in for two goals. John Gorman pointed from a free for Edenderry’s second of the game but just one minute later Ferbane got in for their third goal. On eighteen minutes Ferbane scored a point from a free to give them a thirteen point lead. Two minutes later Edenderry registered their third point of the game and arguably the best score of the game when Paddy Lynch sent over a huge score from forty yards out. Edenderry introduced Cormac Hurley for Stephen Abbott but just three minutes later Stephen returned to the field after Andrew Forde had to be taken off due to an altercation that took place off the ball. Ferbane rounded up the first half with another point to leave the half time score 3-7 0-3.

The start to the second half was poor from both sides and chances were very limited. Ferbane opened the scoring after ten minutes and quickly followed it up with two further points in the twelfth and thirteenth minute. Daniel Ryan pointed for his first of the day from a free and the introduction of Cillian Farrell really helped improve the reds performance. With Shane Connell now mopping up at full back, Cillian’s presence at midfield certainly helped the young reds side. Aaron O’Connell pointed from a free to which Ferbane quickly cancelled out but Daniel Ryan pointed on the twenty second minute for his second of the game. Ferbane hit their final score of the game on the twenty fifth minute and David Farrelly rounded off the scoring for the day with just two minutes later.

Overall the game was more competitive than the score-line suggests but the three goals inside the opening fourteen minutes were Edenderry’s downfall. Of course that is not take away from a fine Ferbane team and they should go well in the Junior championship. On the night the reds were best served by Aaron O’Connell, Daniel Ryan, John Gorman and their man of the match Padriag Foy.
